Background and Purpose

Venerable Master Hsing Yun (1927–2023), founder of Fo Guang Shan and founding president of Fo Guang University, witnessed nearly a century of Buddhist history and social transformation. Throughout his life, he formed extensive connections across the fields of culture, education, religion, and politics. His footsteps spanned Taiwan, Mainland China, and all five continents, exerting profound influence on contemporary society and leaving behind an exceptionally rich body of historical materials and cultural artifacts. To establish a systematic mechanism for the preservation, management, and digitization of the Master's tangible cultural assets—thereby facilitating research and application—the Fo Guang Shan Cultural and Educational Foundation and Fo Guang University formally signed an agreement on March 6, 2024, to establish the Hsing Yun Digital Humanities Research and Development Center.

The mission of the Hsing Yun Digital Humanities Research and Development Center is to digitize, preserve, and conduct research on materials related to Venerable Master Hsing Yun, including writings, audiovisual materials, images, and documents; to promote the digital archiving and open access of Buddhist cultural heritage; and to foster international academic exchange and collaboration in Buddhist digital humanities, thereby advancing the practice and dissemination of Humanistic Buddhism and related research outcomes.

For many years, Fo Guang Shan has been devoted to the preservation, research, and promotion of Buddhist culture, accumulating an exceptionally rich and valuable collection of documents and historical materials. These include the complete works of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, records of his Dharma-propagation activities, audiovisual teachings, handwritten correspondence, photographs and images, cultural artifacts, and artistic works, as well as significant outcomes derived from long-term efforts in Buddhist studies, education, and cultural activities. In order to properly preserve these precious cultural assets and to respond to the demands of knowledge preservation and dissemination in the digital age, a comprehensive plan was formulated to digitize these cultural objects and documents and to establish a digital archives platform.

On July 31, 2024, Fo Guang University and SYSTEX Corporation signed an agreement to initiate a five-year collaborative project titled “Hsing Yun Digital Humanities.” The first phase of this project encompasses the digitization of cultural artifacts and documentary materials from six units: the Fo Guang Shan Cultural and Educational Foundation, the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Center, the Fo Guang Shan Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery, the Fo Guang Shan Tsung Lin University, the Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism, and the Secretariat of the Fo Guang Shan Dharma Hall. The project also includes the construction of a digital archiving system, natural language intelligent search services, and thematic websites. Through this initiative, the archival value of the Master's cultural materials is highlighted, and the rich legacy of his lifelong Dharma propagation is further transmitted to the world.

This platform is a globally unique digital archive centered on Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Through systematic organization, digitization, and interpretive analysis, it presents the Master's lifelong Dharma-propagation activities, philosophical writings, and the significant achievements in Buddhist studies accumulated by Fo Guang Shan over the years. The platform aims to achieve the goals of preservation, sharing, and diverse utilization of resources.

Leveraging the boundless reach of the Internet, this website is available in Traditional Chinese, English, and Simplified Chinese. It serves not only readers in Taiwan but also promotes these archival resources globally, enabling users worldwide to gain a clear digital understanding of Venerable Master Hsing Yun's spiritual thought and the core principles of Humanistic Buddhism.

System Overview

The overall system is structured around three core components: “Hsing Yun Digital Archives,” “Three Thousand Miles of Cloud and Water—The Dharma Propagation Map of Venerable Master Hsing Yun,” and “Seeking the Dharma from the Master.” By integrating Fo Guang Shan's long-accumulated precious archival resources and combining digital technology with humanities research methodologies, the system establishes an integrated platform that supports preservation, research, learning, and outreach.

1. Hsing Yun Digital Archives

The Hsing Yun Digital Archives form the foundational core of the system. Its primary function is the systematic preservation, management, and presentation of digitized documents and artifacts related to Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Organized around thematic datasets, the platform integrates materials covering the Master's lifelong Dharma-propagation activities, philosophical writings, and related documents, images, audiovisual materials, and artifacts associated with Fo Guang Shan.

Users may search for digital objects through thematic browsing, full-site full-text search, and advanced search functions. In presenting search results, the system provides multi-dimensional analytical tools—including timelines, geographic locations, and thematic classifications—to assist users in understanding the archival content from multiple perspectives and in forming a comprehensive, multidimensional knowledge framework.

Each archival record is accompanied by complete metadata. Depending on copyright status and access permissions, materials are available for online viewing or use within designated scopes. Metadata are meticulously created item by item by monastics and staff from the respective Fo Guang Shan archival units to ensure accurate descriptions of people, events, places, and objects. The platform supports desktops, tablets, and mobile devices, enabling users to search and read materials conveniently in various contexts.

2. Three Thousand Miles of Cloud and Water—The Dharma Propagation Map of Venerable Master Hsing Yun

Based on the rich digital archival resources related to Venerable Master Hsing Yun, “Three Thousand Miles of Cloud and Water—The Dharma Propagation Map” integrates textual narratives, images, audiovisual materials, and interactive presentations. Carefully curated content is provided to users, allowing general readers—without requiring specialized academic backgrounds—to gradually and deeply understand the materials. At the same time, users can link back to the original archival sources to meet advanced research and learning needs.

3. Seeking the Dharma from the Master

To enhance the usability and accessibility of archival resources, the system introduces a natural language intelligent query service titled “Seeking the Dharma from the Master,” based on Large Language Models (LLMs). This service serves as a supplementary query method alongside traditional keyword-based searches.

Users may pose questions in natural language to conduct integrated searches across different data types and themes. By combining existing metadata and archival content, the system provides synthesized responses while also guiding users back to original source materials for further reading and research, making it easier to navigate the vast and rich archival world.

Content Description

The content collected on this website originates from valuable materials related to Venerable Master Hsing Yun that have been preserved for many years by various Fo Guang Shan units. Many of these materials were previously difficult to consult comprehensively, or existed only in physical form without digitization. Through digitization and standardized metadata creation, the materials are presented along multiple dimensions—such as timelines, geographic locations, and thematic categories—allowing readers to understand the Master's Dharma-propagation footsteps, intellectual development, and historical context from multiple perspectives and to construct a comprehensive and multidimensional understanding.

Accordingly, documents, images, and metadata are preserved and presented in principle according to their original form at the time of creation. Differences in terminology or expression arising from varying historical contexts are presented solely for purposes of documentation and academic preservation. The platform does not impose value judgments or interpretive positions.

Collection Overview

The Master Hsing Yun Digital Archives covers a period from 1952 to 2023, comprehensively documenting Master Hsing Yun's more than seventy years of Dharma propagation, cultural and educational promotion, and artistic creation. It is dedicated to preserving precious cultural memories and transmitting the spirit of Humanistic Buddhism.

The collection encompasses six major categories: documents and archives, books and documents, audio-visual materials, material artifacts, spatial maps, and digital records. These are primarily provided by the Dharma Hall Secretariat, the Buddhist Academy, the Buddha Memorial Center, the Fo Guang Yuan Art Museum, and the Humanistic Buddhism Research Institute. Through digital archiving, it preserves precious cultural assets and promotes academic research, educational outreach, and cultural sharing.

Currently, 19 archives have been established, containing diverse content such as audio-visual materials, photographs, calligraphy by masters, artworks, newspapers, periodicals, posters, and art dictionaries, showcasing rich and complete collection achievements and allowing more people to gain a deeper understanding of Master Hsing Yun's thoughts, culture, and artistic value.
