Founding Da Ci Children's Home
On December 15, 1970, Da Ci Children's Home was approved by the Social Affairs Bureau of Kaohsiung County Government. Initially, the Huai-en Hall and Zhi-du Hall of the Buddhist College served as temporary housing for the children.
Later, through the enthusiastic support of philanthropist Mr. Hsu Huai-sheng, former manager of the Bank of Communications, and the "Da Ci Children's Home Charity Sale" initiated by fourth-year students and faculty of the Eastern Buddhist College, along with a month-long island-wide charity sale, funds were raised for construction.
Construction began in 1972, and the building was completed on January 6, 1975, accepting orphaned children from various countries, becoming the Buddhist community's first children's home to accept international children. In 1989, it was expanded into a six-story building with offices, reception rooms, activity center, classrooms, dormitories, kitchen, dining hall, bathrooms, medical room, Buddha hall, and children's library, completed in 1991. In 2024, renovations began on the original site, completed in 2025.
To date, over a thousand children have grown up there, forming a warm extended family. Directors over the years have included Venerables Tzu Jung, Tzu Chia, Tzu Yi, Yi Chieh, Yi Lai, Ms. Hsiao Pi-liang, and Lin Chen-yu.
